Unfortunately no. At least, for the moment. NiV is almost a very recent disease that has come to the fore. The scientific community needs time and resources at estimating and managing the risk. That will require stepped-up study of how the virus is transmitted, closer observation of infected people and consideration of vaccinations for at-risk communities. And this takes time. Until then, NiV will take its toll causing significant morbidity and mortality in both animal and human populations. But thanks to the Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala, it has prompted the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), a global alliance of governments and non-profits, to step up efforts to find a cure for the deadly disease.
