Since, at present, no antiviral drug available for Nipah virus disease, the lack of effective vaccines or therapies and the fact that NiV infects human beings, it is considered an emerging disease and a public health issue. Among Nipah’s worrisome traits: Many strains are capable of limited person-to-person transmission, and it is a ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus, which has the highest known rate of mutation and adaptation among biological agents. These factors have led to deaths of infected persons within a short span of time.
