Compared to bone marrow, cord blood cells are “immature”, which means they haven’t been exposed to disease. Cells from the umbilical cord are more adaptable and may be used in a wider variety of patients. Cord blood stem cells are less likely to cause side effects when transplanted, and are available to patients immediately. Cord blood cells are also much easier to collect and cause no pain to the donor.
